Mid to Late 1900s
This era once again saw improvements in firefighting technology. Diesel engines and automatic transmissions became standard issue for fire engines in the 1960's. In the late 1900's common firefighting tools that were made of heavyweight brass reinvented themselves in lightweight, aluminum form. The fog nozzle became common place and foam was also more commonly used to fight fires. Two-way radios, pagers, the 9-1-1 system and cell phones combined to change the landscape of emergency communications forever. With the strict building codes and fire-resistant building materials that were utilized during the late 1900's, structure fires were declining and fire departments found themselves responding to more medical emergency calls in the home and involving vehicles than ever before.
